All Tesco supermarkets in the Republic will be closed today as 9,500 member as the firm’s workforce stage a one-day strike in a dispute over pay.

The stoppage was going ahead following the breakdown of talks at the Labour Court yesterday.

The workers are represented by SIPTU and Mandate.

The closure affects 76 stores and will cost Tesco an estimated £4 million.

Tesco management claimed last night that the strike was unnecessary because they had made a pay rise offer of up to 4 per cent on top of the 7.5 per centfixed under the PPF.

But Mandate claimed the company had failed to table adequate proposals.
