Three teenagers were appointed today to the National Children's Advisory Council in a move designed to include children in policy decisions which affect them.

Making the announcement, the Minister for Children Ms Mary Hanafin said the appointment was part of the Government's policy to consult closely with young people as outlined in its National Children's Strategy.

The Minister said the teenagers' presence would be of "great benefit to all other Council members, the Government and, ultimately, the children and young people at whom the 10-year strategy is aimed".

Ms Jean Kelly (13) from Glenageary, Co Dublin is the youngest of the representatives appointed today. Ms Leonie O'Connell (16) from Thurles, Co Tipperary and Mr David Cawley (17) from Sligo were also chosen to work with the Government body.

The council is expected to have an independent advisory role in relation to the implementation of the National Children's Strategy and the better coordination and delivery of services to children.

Ms Hanafin said the move was a significant step towards "giving children a voice in matters that affect them".
