The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern

Mr Ahern made the pledge following what he said had been the successful launch of the euro currency.

He said: "Ireland will aim for sustained economic growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion. Now that the euro is a reality, we must make sure that the internal market works and is seen to work for our citizens. And we must ensure quality, sustainable employment for our people".

Mr Ahern made his comments in response to a commitment by the current Spanish presidency of the EU to achieve real progress at a European Council session in Barcelona in March.

He said that at that meeting Ireland would be calling for tight deadlines to make the financial services internal market a reality.

"This will make access to capital cheaper, give pensions more scope for investments and profits and boost our financial services sector. We also want real consumer protection for our citizens in this area," he said.
