Japan's Toru Taniguchi fired a four-under-par 67 to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the $3.7 million Nissan Open.
Taniguchi, playing in the event on a sponsor's exemption, returned five birdies and one bogey to finish nine-under on 133, one stroke ahead of Brad Faxon, Scott McCarron, Len Mattiace and overnight leader Jesper Parnevik of Sweden.
Bob Tway was one shot further back on 135 after a bogey-free 68. Tied on 136 were David Duval, David Peoples, Tommy Armour and JJ Henry.
South African Rory Sabbatini, Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain, Britain's Lee Westwood, Fred Funk and Scott Verplank were on 137.
Defending champion Robert Allenby of Australia qualified for the last two rounds after shooting a 66 for 139. - Reuters
