London - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers closed in on the heart of Jaffna town yesterday after a lightning strike from three sides to recapture their former stronghold from government troops. A pro-rebel Internet website said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were making a final push towards the centre of the town and had asked civilians living there to move to safer areas on the battle-torn northern peninsula. The Tamilnet website (www.Tamilnet.com), monitored in London, said the LTTE was attacking army positions in the heart of the town it lost to the government in 1995.
