Thousands of Dublin motorists using the Tallaght by pass will experience delays this week while work continues on baking safe a pedestrian bridge damaged in a weekend road accident.

The stretch between Belgard Road and Springfield has been closed since Saturday morning, when a mechanical digger crashed into the bridge. A spokesman for South Dublin County Council said the bridge may have to be dismantled.

Diversions will continue to operate until nearly the end of the week.
