Vatican City - Pope John Paul, opening a synod on the challenges facing Catholicism in the Americas 500 years after their discovery, asked bishops yesterday to review Christianity's past as the church approaches the new millennium.
The Pope opened the month-long synod at a Mass in St Peter's Basilica.
