Results from a suspect foot-and-mouth case in Co Louth have proved negative.

Samples from four calves on a farm near Dunleer were sent to Pirbright Laboratories in Britain last week after the animals were found to have mouth lesions.

The Department of Agriculture is still waiting on results from a sample taken from a sheep at Kildare Chilling Company. The animal is known to be from a farm in Offaly and was found to have mouth lesions.

A spokesman said the sample had been sent as a precautionary measure and the Department was not overly concerned.
