Study shows Cork losing out on jobs

CORK is losing out in job creation to Dublin and other major cities, a Fianna Fail councillor has claimed.

Mr Noel O'Flynn conducted an analysis of the number of jobs created by foreign companies in the State's five main cities during 1996. The jobs - actual and projected - were compared with the preliminary figures. The results, Mr O'Flynn said, showed that Cork was losing out to Dublin.

Comparing the number of new jobs created per 1,000 of population, Mr O'Flynn said Dublin yielded a ratio of 10.84 while Cork yielded a ratio of 2.96, which is also lower than the ratios for Limerick, Galway and Waterford.

Criticising the Government's job creation record in his constituency, he said: "Not a single new overseas investment job has been announced for the north side of Cork city in 1996, according to these statistics."
