Liverpool's poor league form continued today with a goalless draw against Everton in a typically robust Merseyside derby.
Liverpool have now lost five and drawn two of their last seven league games, and from being four points clear at the top six weeks ago they are now in fifth place, seven points behind leaders Arsenal.
It was the first time Everton had gone into a derby above their city rivals since April 1987, and they remained one point and one place above their neighbours in fourth on 33.
There were few openings in a tightly contested first half at Anfield, but Emile Heskey headed wide from a great position in the 53rd minute, two minutes after coming on as a substitute.
The second half was also short of chances as both sets of players tore into the tackle with no time for anybody to linger on the ball.
Everton worked tirelessly to frustrate the hosts and went closest to winning it when teenage striker Wayne Rooney, on as a substitute, hit the bar with a deflected shot in the 73rd minute.
