Sri Lanka's military said today it had confined Tamil Tigers separatists to a no-fire zone where tens of thousands of civilians are holed up.

It said 420 guerrillas had been killed in three days of fighting.

"The only uncleared area left is the no-fire zone," military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told Reuters. "We have recovered over 420 bodies over the last three days."
