The saga of the Spire of Dublin finally appears to be ending as Dublin City Council announced the lights at its tip are due to be switched on this evening.

City council officials will meet this morning to work out final details and the lights on the O'Connell Street monument should be formally switched on by dusk.

When the permanent lighting is operational, light will be diffused throughout the top 12 metres of the structure, through 11,884 tiny perforations.

The final section of the Spire - which is 120 metres high, or seven times the height of the nearby GPO - was lifted into place in January.
