`A nightmare" is how one staffer at TG4 described the dilemma the station faces in complying with the rule that political parties must get equal coverage in the run-up to a general election. The problem arises because the new leader of Fine Gael, Michael Noonan, has perfect Irish and is well capable of giving a long fluent interview in the first language. The other party leaders are not. When John Bruton led FG this was no problem, as he, Bertie Ahern and Ruairi Quinn had an equally lowlevel of competence. Nuacht TG4 chief news editor Michael Lally says "this is a new situation that will have to be looked at for balance, not just by us but for other stations as well. What happens in the North is that as Gerry Adams has a cupla focal, we just run David Trimble in English. We may do the same here and run the Taoiseach in English up against Noonan in Irish. Or we might take another minister instead, like Micheal Martin. Editorial decisions will have to be made."
