Forced to make a formal application to go without his jacket on such a hot day, a solicitor says he will be contacting the Health and Safety Authority about conditions at Limerick District Court because of its lack of air conditioning.

Solicitor John Devane had exchanges with Judge Eugene O’Kelly. The legal aid solicitor had to make a formal application before the court so he could take off his suit jacket because he was too hot.

Mr Devane came into court yesterday wearing only his shirt and tie, prompting the judge to give him a dressing down about his attire. The normal dress code would require Mr Devane to wear a full suit, including his suit jacket.

Mr Devane said he was too hot, adding he was about to apply to the court to be allowed to remove his jacket.

The court was packed with members of the public who had come to court mostly dressed in shorts and T-shirts.

Granting Mr Devane’s application, Judge O’Kelly said: “I think, where temperatures seem to have soared, that practitioners of the court can be allowed to remove their jackets.”
