The value of confession

Sir, – While the review of the book The Dark Box ("A little box and a dark history", Weekend Review, March 22nd) was interesting, it also presented a sometimes perverse view of the sacrament as it avoided discussing its purpose and value. If one visits the church on Merrion Road in Dublin one finds four confessionals, with penitents awaiting the kind and compassionate priests, who give encouragement to those of us who still experience the benefit of frequent confession in the knowledge that we are forgiven our transgressions and receive the grace to carry on in an environment that is hostile to Christian values. Yours, etc,

CATHERINE LLOYD,
