Ireland's Des Smyth maintained his share of the lead at the halfway stage of the US Champions Tour Qualifying Tournament at World Woods Golf Club in Florida.

Smyth carded a second-round 68 for a nine-under total of 135 alongside Japan's Seiji Ebihara.

Ebihara, the leading money winner on the 2002 European Seniors Tour, shot a bogey-free round of 65 with six birdies in his first eight holes.

Ebihara and Smyth are one stroke in front of American Jerry McGee and three strokes ahead of former major league baseball pitcher Rick Rhoden, Mark Pfeil and Butch Sheehan who is the brother of LPGA star Patty Sheehan.

Smyth's fellow Irishman Eamonn Darcy shot a second-round 74 to lie joint 28th on 143, one under par.

After tomorrow's final round, the top 16 finishers earn cards for the 2003 season - while the top eight professionals receive full exemptions into all open co-sponsored events on the Champions Tour next year.
