The skoool.ie education website has been named as one of the world's top five e-learning products at the World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva.

The three-day United Nations-sponsored summit, which came to a close yesterday, identified a total of 40 exemplars from more than 800 top international e-products, demonstrating best practice in e-content and creativity.

The skoool.ie site, which was developed by AIB, The Irish Times and Intel Ireland, was selected with four other sites under the e-learning category by a summit grand jury.

Another Irish website, HotelWorld.com, was selected in the e-business category.

Mr Martin Casey, managing director of Arekibo, and a member of the expert judging panel, said: "Making existing excellence visible is the goal of the World Summit Awards. Forty outstanding projects from all over the world were chosen by the WSA to exemplify the quality of today's multimedia market worldwide.

"A special emphasis was put on projects which show the benefits of information and communication technology for the development of communities and help to bridge the growing content gap between developed and developing countries."

Speaking at the summit, the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, said it provided "a unique opportunity to develop a better understanding of the new information and communications technologies and their impact on the development of the international community".
