A number of people who were brought to hospital following violent clashes between two traveller families at the weekend have been placed under Garda protection at University College Hospital, Galway, a court was told yesterday.

At a special sitting of Galway District Court yesterday seven men were remanded in custody on charges involving violent disorder and assault. The court heard that five men, all suffering from stab wounds, had been taken to hospital after a series of incidents in the city in which a variety of weapons were used.

Mr Patrick McDonagh (25), Hillside Park; Mr Edward McDonagh (31), Tuam Road; Mr Michael McDonagh (28), Clybawn Road; Mr Bernard McDonagh (30), Tuam Road; Mr Patrick McDonagh (30), Rahoon; Mr John Corcoran (23), Rahoon Park, and Mr Patrick Corcoran (34), of Renmore, Galway, either denied or made no reply when charged.

Judge John Garavan refused Mr Patrick McDonagh from Rahoon bail but granted Mr Patrick Corcoran consent to bail after he told him he had never been in trouble before and had never been inside a courthouse. He remanded all seven men in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear before the court on October 5th.
