A defendant who has been abusing drugs since he was 13 had his sentence for selling ecstasy tablets adjourned until May 15th next at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Gavin Bergin (27), Mountshannon Road, Kilmainham, Dublin, pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to possession of ecstasy for sale and supply on December 13th, 1998.

Judge Elizabeth Dunne agreed to adjourn sentence for the further period, "with great reluctance", to allow Bergin undergo urinanalysis.

Mr Patrick Marrinan, defence counsel, said Bergin came from a respectable family background with parents who did not condone this sort of behaviour.
