TORY Party vice chairman, Dame Angela Rumbold last eight declared her outright opposition to a European single currency in contravention of John Major's "wait and see" policy.

Dame Angela, who is defending Mitcham and Morden, told BBC2's Newsnight: "I won't vote for it". Her move follows the disclosure last week that dozens of Tory candidates were coming out against European monetary union in their personal election addresses.

Labour claimed her decision to speak out showed that Conservative Central Office was not backing the Prime Minister.
