Senior positions in Irish Water, the new State-owned public utility company, will be advertised in the “next couple of weeks”, a Government spokesman has said.

Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan reported to his colleagues at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting that engineering survey work had already started to assess the requirements of different areas throughout the State.

Legislation to put Irish Water on a statutory footing is being drafted with the aim of bringing it to the Dáil within a month or so. Positions including managing director and head of finance will be advertised shortly.

The Government decided last April to establish Irish Water as an independent State-owned subsidiary within the Bord Gáis Éireann (BGE) group. The decision to transfer water services functions from local authorities was based on an independent assessment with a view to improving efficiency of delivery, provide access to new funding sources and improve strategic planning.

Consumers will pay for the delivery of water services.
