Gardai increased security on the American embassy in Dublin yesterday in the wake of the suicide bombings in the Unites States.
Extra garda∅ were also deployed to the offices of major American businesses in Ireland, including Dell, Gateway and Intel, to guard against possible attacks.
A garda spokesman said the measures were purely precationary, adding no bomb threats had been reported.
"We increased security at the US embassy and the ambassador's residence in Phoenix Park as well as at other American interests in Ireland," he said.
"Instructions were sent out to officers in various stations telling them to increase security at businesss in their locality.
"It has been left to them to organise things locally as they know best what is in their area."
