NEW YORK - The UN Security Council yesterday agreed to formally reject aa Iraqi compromise proposal aimed at ending a four day stand off between UN weapons inspectors and Iraqi authorities, diplomats said. It said the council "rejects attempts by Iraq to impose conditions on the conduct of inspections by the Special Commission."

The Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Tareq Aziz, had earlier sent a letter to the Unscom chairman, Mr Rolf Ekeus, who since decided to travel to Baghdad on Monday.
