The SDLP has called for national insurance numbers to be used to prevent electoral fraud. Before a meeting with the chief electoral officer yesterday, the party's chairman, Mr Alex Attwood, said it was recommending amendments to a Westminster bill on electoral fraud.

These included a 100-yard neutral zone around polling stations and the inclusion of national insurance numbers on electoral registration papers.
