Flanker Cameron Mather has been recalled to the Scotland team to play France in pool B on Saturday, just five days after arriving at the World Cup and three years after earning his last cap.

The 31-year-old was called into the squad as a replacement for first choice openside flanker Andrew Mower, who was ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury.

Mather was not expected to play against France but was promoted into the starting team after Jon Petrie injured his shoulder and Martin Leslie was suspended for 12 weeks for kneeing in Monday's win over the United States.

"It has been some chain of events in the last week. I had been coming out here resigned not to playing," Mather, who made his last international appearance against the French in March 2000, said in a statement.

"Now it's the challenge of playing France and facing two of the best back row forwards in the world in Serge Betsen and Olivier Magne and my overwhelming feeling is of excitement."

Mather was one of five changes from the side that defeated the U.S. 39-15 in Brisbane for a match that should decide the pool winners.

Kenny Logan replaced two-try hero Simon Danielli on the wing, captain Bryan Redpath was recalled at scrumhalf, Scott Murray rejoined Stuart Grimes at lock and Jason White was restored to the back row.

There was also a positional change with Chris Paterson switching from left wing to right.

"We've gone for experience in this game. Simon has come through very well and I'm delighted with his progress," Scottish coach Ian McGeechan said of Danielli, who is relegated to the bench.

"We know we have to perform in every part of the team and that's a great challenge to everyone.

"The attitude in the squad has been superb and everyone knows in the current situation that added responsibilities are going to be on their shoulders to make sure we perform."
