A study of primary school remedial services has been commissioned by the Minister for Education, Ms Breathnach.

The study, which starts next month, will examine whether the best possible benefit to pupils is achieved by the remedial education scheme. It will also study the effect on children's attainment in literacy and mathematics.

The review will survey the organisation of remedial teaching and the number of pupils receiving it, the criteria for inclusion and withdrawal of pupils from it, and the development and implementation of national policy on remedial teaching in schools.
