French President Nicolas Sarkozy was taken to hospital today after suffering a minor illness while exercising, officials said.

French television and radio said the 54-year-old president had been out jogging at the La Lanterne residence in Versailles, just outside Paris.

LCI television quoted a source close to Mr Sarkozy as saying that he had suffered from an "... illness that was considered to be minor".

He was taken to the Val-de-Grace military hospital in the French capital, a government source said.

"He was immediately seen to by his doctor. He is currently undergoing extra examinations," the statement said. "Other information will be communicated later." His office published the results of a regular health check at the beginning of July which said he had had blood and cardiovascular tests which were normal.

Mr Sarkozy, who took office in May 2007, was briefly hospitalised in October of that year for treatment for angina.
