Seventh-seeded Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario broke a 15-match losing streak to Martina Hingis with a 6-2, 6-4 quarter-final win in the Bausch & Lomb Championships
in Florida.
"I approached the match thinking I had to be more aggressive," said Sanchez-Vicario. "I took some chances and probably surprised her."
Sanchez, a two-time champion here, won her first career meeting with Hingis but lost the next 15 until winning here. Hingis had won their four prior meetings on clay since 1997 - all in straight sets.
Sanchez’s semi-final today is against sixth-seed Amelie Mauresmo of France, who advanced by walkover when Russian third seed Elena Dementieva defaulted with a torn left foot muscle.
The highest seed left is South Africa's Amanda Coetzer who advanced to the semi-finals here for the third time in her career with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Meghann Shaughnessy.
Coetzer will face Russia's Nadia Petrova who ousted Italy's Silvia Farina Elia 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
