People must be on their guard against fires as the festive season has proven a high risk time, it was warned today.

The National Safety Council (NSC) said simple precautions like installing smoke alarms could prevent tragedies.

"There should be at least two smoke alarms installed in your home to protect you and your family and they should be tested once a week," said Mr Alan Richardson of the NSC.

"Smoke alarms alert you to the danger of a fire and give you time to act."

The NSC warned people not to remove batteries from smoke alarms for use in children's Christmas toys or in the TV remote control.

So far this year 36 have people lost their lives in fire-related tragedies in Ireland . A new television advert from the council will highlight the dangers associated with smoking and drinking alcohol in the home.

To protect the home this festive season the NSC advised people to place real Christmas trees in a sturdy base filled with water, or if using an artificial tree, ensure it is flame-resistant.

Christmas lights should be marked with a recognised safety standard and any lights being used outside must be suitable, with the right transformer.

The NSC warned people to keep lighted candles out of reach of children.

The safety guidelines also included keeping strings of Christmas cards away from candles and open fires and ensuring wrapping paper is not burnt in the fireplace.

The NSC also urged people to clean ovens or stoves prior to Christmas, as the extra usage on the appliances can spark a fire.
