Vatican City - President Saddam Hussein has thanked Pope John Paul II for his interest in seeing the suffering of the Iraqi people alleviated, the Vatican said yesterday, disclosing that the Pope had received a personal letter from the Iraqi leader.

The Vatican did not say when the letter was sent. The Pope has condemned the embargo, imposed by the UN after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, saying sanctions generally hit the poor hardest in any given country.
