Hanover - German police said yesterday unknown saboteurs had damaged a rail line in an attack they suspect is linked to plans to transport nuclear waste on the rail from France to a nearby waste depot in late March.

Authorities said the saboteurs had removed a two-metre section of rail between the towns of Vastorf and Bavendorf in Lower Saxony but had left behind a red and white warning on the track. Germany recently agreed to resume to return nuclear waste shipped to France for reprocessing after a three-year interruption following massive protests.
