Ryanair has announced an investment of $280 million (€220 million) to expand its operations from Barcelona's Girona airport.

From March next year, the carrier will invest the money in four new Boeing 737-800 aircraft and 17 new routes from the Girona airport.

The company will open 17 new routes from the airport and claims that it will deliver an additional one million passengers per annum.

The expansion brings to 40 the number of Ryanair routes operating from Barcelona.
