Ryanair saw a 24 per cent increase in passenger numbers in June to 2.27 million

The budget airline said its load factor - the proportion of seats filled - was 87 per cent of capacity, up from 79 per cent in the same month the previous year.

"These figures are in line with our previous guidance of increased load factors and declining yields through the summer," a  Ryanair spokeswoman said.

The airline, which has been cutting ticket prices to fill seats on a rapidly expanding network amid fierce competition, said last month it was happy with the volume of bookings it had so far for the summer, a quarter in which it traditionally makes around half of its annual profit.

The company's shares were up nearly 3 per cent at €4.82 in Dublin this morning.
