Moscow - The Russian government threatened yesterday to clamp down on Western news outlets seen as hostile to it, prompting fears of Soviet-style curbs on media freedom.

Moscow was studying moves to suspend the activities of foreign and domestic media responsible for reports "hostile to Russian interests," information ministry spokesman, Mr Yury Akinshin, said.

Leading press freedom lawyer, Mr Alexander Manov, criticised the proposed curbs as "reactionary".
