RTE's `Prime Time' producer is European journalist of the year

Michael Heney, a producer with the RTE current affairs programme Prime Time, has won the 2000 European Journalist of the Year Award. Mr Heney was nominated for work in the former Yugoslavia, in particular for broadcasts entitled Exodus of the Kosovars and Baby Adriana's Return to the Future.

The award is presented by the Association of European Journalists in memory of the late Irish journalist and EU official Mr Liam Hourican.

The winner of the National Newspapers category was Mark Hennessy of the Irish Examiner for his article EU slowly moving towards a common stance on crime, a report of the EU summit in Tampere, Finland.

The Irish Times Paris and Maghreb correspondent Lara Marlowe received a special commendation for her articles Herr Tiemann wants to take his children on holiday and A grand betrayal. Also awarded a special commendation were Stephen Collins of the Sunday Tribune for his articles With Prodi, the EU is get- ting what it deserves and The Time for hand-wringing on NATO is over; and Jerome Reilly of the Irish Independent for his report Dana's Victory: The Rearguard Revolts.
