The six Romanian immigrants who eluded gardai at Dun Laoghaire port on Sunday evening turned up at the Department of Justice yesterday to apply for political asylum.
The six immigrants had run from the port after disembarking from the 8.25 p.m. ferry from Holyhead. A woman garda pursued them and sustained an injury to her wrist after a struggle with one of the immigrants. Gardai arrested the Romanian allegedly involved in the struggle after he completed his application for asylum yesterday.
A Garda spokesman said the man was charged last night at the District Court in the Bridewell under Section 2 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act. He was subsequently released on bail.
