Irish World Cup goalkeeper Shay Given is ready to blunt the threat of free kick specialist Pierre van Hooijdonk when Newcastle United face Feyenoord in the Champions League on Tuesday.
"We are aware of van Hooijdonk's ability at free kicks but I think that Shay Given will deal with it," Newcastle manager Bobby Robson said on Monday.
"We know not to give any free kicks away in the first place but sometimes that is impossible," he told a news conference as his side prepared for the group E match at St James Park.
Van Hooijdonk secured Feyenoord a point against Juventus in their opening group E match with a superb free kick in Rotterdam last week.
"John Karelse (Newcastle's reserve team goalkeeper) is familiar with most things that happen in Dutch football and has spoken to Shay about van Hooijdonk,"
Robson said. "Shay Given is a World Cup goalkeeper so he is quite prepared to look into all eventualities and deal with it. "But this isn't a terribly big thing and we are not going to frightened - a free kick's a free kick and he'll either score or he won't score."
