Organisers of a major road race in Co Antrim that was called off due to extensive oil spills on the course have said they believe the track was deliberately sabotaged.

The Mid-Antrim 150 road race in Clough was cancelled after the clerk of the course found a mile-and-a-half stretch of the track covered with a mixture of oil and diesel on Saturday morning. Although a major clean-up took place, the event was subsequently cancelled.

Jack Agnew of the Mid-Antrim Motorcycle Club said the belief was the spill had been deliberate. “It looks like it was malicious but we’ve no evidence to prove that,” he said.

“We did our best to run the event but I wasn’t prepared to risk the safety of riders. We are determined that the race will run again next year.”
