An agency offering assistance to the victims of crime has reported a 20 per cent increase in demand for its services last year.

The National Crime Victims helpline said contacts from members of the public increased from 1,963 in 2007 to 2,413 in 2008.

The figures also showed an increase of 15 per cent in the number of calls for January 2009 when compared to the same month last year.

Helpline Co-ordinator Maeve Ryan said the rise is due to a greater awareness of the service among the public.

Launched in November 2005, the helpline provides information and support to victims of crime.

Although assault continues to be the most common reason for calls, the helpline provides support to anyone affected by crime.

Ms Ryan said: “A handbag snatch or burglary, for example, can understandably have a significant impact and people may require considerable support and assistance after such crimes.

“Our volunteers understand the effects of crime, we provide emotional support to callers and we can put them in touch with relevant support organisations in their own area,” she added.

The helpline number is 1850 211407.
