Guatemala City - The Guatemalan government announced a 30-day nationwide "state of alarm", which means that a number of constitutional rights are suspended, following a weekend mass breakout from a maximum-security prison.

Constitutional guarantees suspended include freedom of movement, detainees' rights as regards interrogations, freedom of assembly and freedom to demonstrate, presidential spokesman, Mr Luis Mijangos, said.
