A senior garda leading the investigation into the violent death of Donegal man Shaun T Carlin is to ask the Director of Public Prosecutions to review the decision not to charge anyone in relation to the death.

Supt Jim Gallagher of Letterkenny Garda station confirmed that the file was returned by the DPP recently with the instruction that no one be charged. However, Supt told the Donegal News this week that Gallagher would be asking the DPP to review this decision.

"We sent a very comprehensive file away to the DPP and we have got to abide by his decision. However, we can ask for a review and I will be asking for a review."

He confirmed that eight young people from the Letterkenny and Ballybofey areas are before the courts for public order offences on the night of Mr Carlin's death.

"If more serious charges were to be brought, they would have to be considered by the DPP because of the tragic loss of life," Supt Gallagher said.

Mr Carlin (23) from Castlefin, died in hospital on May 2nd last year from injuries sustained after he was set upon by a gang in Letterkenny.

He ended up under a bus which then moved away while he was on the ground.

Speaking three weeks ago on the anniversary of Mr Carlin's death, his uncle, Michael Carlin, said the family were convinced that some people knew what happened but had not come forward.

The family declined to comment on the DPP's decision.
