Customs officers seized nearly two million cigarettes worth nearly €750,000 in joint operations in Louth and Dublin yesterday.

The two consignments of Benson & Hedges, Silk Cut and L&M cigarettes arrived from Poland.

A man in his forties was arrested by gardaí and Revenue officers after he collected a consignment in Louth yesterday afternoon.

Hours later the second batch arrived in Dublin Port and was intercepted by Revenue officials.

The man arrested in Louth was later released and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Both consignments were addressed to the same fictitious Irish company.
