The jury in the trial of a Limerick man charged with murder has been discharged and a retrial will now take place in Dublin.
Greg Crawford (23), St Munchin’s Street, St Mary’s Park, Limerick, had denied the murder of Gareth Grant (25), a father of three, outside his home at St Ita’s Street, St Mary’s Park, on October 8th, 2008.
The jury in the trial at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Limerick began considering its verdict last Friday following two weeks of evidence. However, when the jurors returned yesterday to resume deliberations, Mr Justice Paul Carney discharged them from further dealings with the case.
He informed them that something was alleged to have happened and added: “As a result I’ve been asked that you should not proceed further with the trial.”
Mr Justice Carney said he was not going into the details but said that the vast majority of the jurors “are not affected by what happened”. The judge thanked them for their service and excused them from jury duty for the rest of their lives. The case was put back to the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court in Dublin next Monday.
