A number of older residents of the Abbeyleix Community Nursing Unit in Co Laois have brought a High Court challenge to the HSE’s “unilateral” and “devastating” decision to close the unit for financial reasons.

The case against the HSE and Minister for Health has been taken by Maureen Delaney (89), Bridget O’Neill (92) and Catherine Kelly (93). Mr Justice Paul Butler granted counsel leave to challenge the closure decision in judicial review proceedings. The matter was returned to next month.
