ESAT Digifone and Eircell were prevented from erecting mobile phone equipment on two masts in Co Leitrim when Carrick-on-Shannon residents entered ESB property yesterday. Gardai were called and following negotiations work was suspended on the two masts for the day.

At the Mullaghmore site, the gates were locked but residents, who are objecting to the mobile phone equipment being sited in areas of high population, gained entry to the ESB premises. They stood under the mast refusing to move despite being asked to by gardai. A similar situation took place at the Summerhill site, where locals blocked the entrance to the ESB depot.
