DUNDALK Urban District Council has been granted an interim injunction to prevent obstruction of the building of 24 local authority houses. Local residents last week stood in front of the contractor and prevented him from bringing in machinery to carry out site clearance work in the O'Hanlon Park area.

The secretary of the O'Hanlon Park Residents' Association, Mr Anthony Taaffe, said they were opposing the building of the houses "on the last remaining green in our area that is suitable for children to play on". He said there were 600 houses in the area and some families had up to six children, who needed somewhere to play.

Claims that residents were opposed to the new houses because they were for local authority tenants have been denied. "We have council houses. This is not a housing issue, it is a green issue", Mr Taaffe said.

The objectors were last night taking legal advice.
