A report into the death of a two-year-old girl following the cancellation of scheduled surgery has been done, and copies of the report have been given to the child's parents.

Limerick girl Róisín Ruddle died after Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, Dublin, postponed planned heart surgery two weeks ago.

The report was ordered by the Minister for Health, Mr Micheál Martin, into the cancellation of surgery and was compiled by the Eastern Regional Health Authority.

The hospital blamed a shortage of intensive care nursing staff for its decision almost two weeks ago.

The child was sent home to await a new appointment but within hours she had died.
