A MAN was remanded in custody with consent to bail at a sitting of Clones District Court yesterday when he appeared on a charge of unlawfully assaulting a man who died in hospital earlier in the week from head injuries.

John McCafferty (24), of no fixed address but said to be residing at Knockatallon, Co Moghan, was charged with causing bodily harm to Mr Patrick Maguire (19), of Annalore street, Clones, on the night of, May 13th-14th.

Mr Maguire was found in a semi conscious state at Hill Street, Monaghan, suffering from severe head wounds. He died a short time later at Monaghan General Hospital.

Supt Edward Murray off Monaghan said the accused came from Northern Ireland and had no permanent residence in the Republic.

Judge Donal McArdle remanded Mr McCafferty to a further sitting at Arva District Court, Co Cavan, on May 22nd.
