The Nigerian Red Cross has reported that over 165 people have been

killed and 928 injured in three days of Christian-Muslim violence in the central Nigerian city of Jos.

"Our records, as at this afternoon, show that 165 bodies have been deposited at various hospitals in Jos. We also brought 928 who are injured,'' said Red Cross official Mr Phillip Macham.

Mr Macham was speaking to AFPshortly before briefing the chief medical director of the main university teaching hospital in Jos.

"This figure includes those that were brought by the police and other organisations. We still have so many bodies on the streets. We are over stretched," he added.

Earlier, a state government official said 51 people had been killed and more than 500 wounded by midday today.

With the figures provided by the Red Cross, it appeared likely the real toll would be well over 200.

A correspondent with the US network National Public Radioin the city told AFPhe had seen three truckloads of bodies delivered to the city morgue in a half-hour period today.
