The Army Ranger unit, which the Government announced would be sent to East Timor as part of the Interfet force, is expected to go to the region in about two weeks' time.

The unit will travel to Darwin, Australia, in the middle of this month and on to Dili between October 20th and 25th.

A three-man army reconnaissance team yesterday briefed the Minister for Defence, Mr Smith, to establish what role the Irish rangers will play in East Timor.

The Cabinet is expected to agree next week a resolution to send a Ranger unit to the troubled country to assist in peace enforcement.

An army spokesman said it is likely the Rangers will be part of a New Zealand battalion, which will also include Canadian soldiers.
